Default Block Re-Surfacing

I am rebuilding my 1996 LT4 Grand Sport engine. The rebuilder will be machining the top of the block and told me that the VIN stamp will be removed during this operation. Is there any other area of the block with the full VIN number? If the VIN number will be machined-off, what it an acceptable way to document that this is the original block? This machining will be done this week, so a quick answer will be appreciated. Thanks. Lon Barnaby lonbarnaby@gmail.com

I would take a picture of it. I don't know that there's much else you can do.

Some machine shops have a CNC program that can do it. I think its a waste of time, build it right and forget about the #s.
One day they will all be faked anyways

It depends on intention. Pictures with the numbers for a restamp can help with the matching numbers deal. That only counts on a stock rebuild. If you are just equal decking or truing, the numbers may not lost. If you're decking to have piston at deck or typically 9.000" ,vs stock 9.025 - 9.045"., numbers are normally lost. Thinner head gasket can compensate for piston down in the hole. .040 head gasket is used when piston is even with deck. If this is not a competition rebuild equal decking should be all that's necessary.
