Default Need help on distributor on l98 engine please!

I just installed my edlebrock intake, and what a PAIN. NEVER again.
I cant drive the car yet, because apparently I got the distributor off a gear, to an advanced state. The car is running REALLY rich, hardly holds idle, and pings at low rpm. Question is, can I time it with the base, without removing the dist? I have an ed wright stage 2 chip, and I am not sure if that advances timing as well. I want it to be stock timing, or around there, but dont know the procedure for timing on this car.
Does anyone know the factory timing, and how to set it, and what plug wire to put the light? I know these are probably basic questions and I should know them, but ignition is not my thing...
IF I have to pull the dist. again, does anyone know if I can do it with the intake on??
BTW the car is a 91 6 speed, if that matters...

I believe your base timing (with the EST connecor in the Blk/Tan wire open) is 6deg BTDC. Clip the timing light pickup onto the #1 wire and shine the light onto the left side of the damper. There you will see the timing marker.

First check your base timing to see what's up. Then you can try to rotate the dist (CW) to take out some timing if necessary.

If you cannot get enough dist rotation, you don't need to remove the dist completely. Remove the dist cap, pull the dist up far enough to be able to rotate the rotor CW while holding the base fixed. After rotating the rotor one click, drop the dist back in, install the cap and wires and check base timing.

Make sure though, that when you drop the dist back in that it seats with the oil pump drive shaft. If it doesn't, there will be about 1/4" - 1/2" gap between the dist and the intake. You may have to "bump" the starter a few times to get the dist to drop in all the way.

Good luck!

And if you do end up having to pull it completely back out (which you might, to get the oil pump drive lined-up correctly) you should be able to do it with the plenum in place.

Thanks guys! I am certain, that I had it aligned correctly the first time, but it wouldnt seat on the pump and I had the 1/4 inch gap that you spoke of earlier. So, I figured I just had it in the wrong place, and moved up one...

BTW where is the est connector? I assume I need to disconect it when I go to do the timing?

It is located on the firewall (or very close to it) near the brake booster, towards the center of the car. It is a brown cylidrical clip with a tan wire on each side of the clip. Just unclip it before you set your timing.
