I have a 383 92 with the Hot Cam. We haven't dyno'd/redone the ECM yet, still breaking the motor in. A couple of times the ECM has set EGR code. I haven't noticed any degredation in performace when this occurs. I'm assuming ths is because of the overlap ground into the later stock and Hot Cams that was done to eliminate the need for an EGR. Will I be able to program the EGR out or should I just remove it?
In theory the computer is setting a code because it doesn't read a difference in the O2 sensors when it is commanding EGR to come on. So, either your EGR system is not functioning or it is not making enough difference anyway with the cam's amount of overlap.
When you get into the chip there won't exactly be an "EGR Off" switch, but there's a fairly easy way to do it. You can leave pretty much everything the same, but jack the EGR enable temp through the roof.
There will be a field called EGR Enable Coolant Temp Threshold, set this as high as you can. Effectively you are telling the car not to enable EGR until the car reaches over 300 degrees. By doing this your computer will never try to enable it and thus it will never set a code for it.
You can also uncheck the box for EGR Diagnostic, code 32, that will make the computer ignore it, but it will still try to enable it. LT4 guys have no EGR and can pass with the Hot Cam, you should be able to as well if you get the tuning right.
