Well i rented the wheel puller and i just had a few questions. Well one of the screws are bent, so i was wondering if it would be a bad idea to use only one screw. I tried with two screws but it still won't come out, then again when i use the screw that's bent the puller goes crooked and i'm afraid it might break something. Any help would be great. thanx
You will not get it off with one screw. as far as the bent screw if it screws in at least 5 or six turns you could still use it.. I assume your talking the screws that thread into the wheel not the center one. You would have to space the bent screw with washers. I guess you dont have a screw laying aroung to repace it. It might be easier to get a replacement. :smash:
Well i think i'll try using washers to even it out. The wheel puller has to be aligned properly and not slanted towards the top or bottom of the steering wheel? how easy should the steering wheel come off?
I agree....you need to use all the screws for leverage to pull the wheel off.
Get another screw or another rental to help you do the job right.
Also be sure this tool is also a wheel installer.
With a telescoping wheel, youll find it tricky to hold the center post/nut on reinstall of the wheel.
blk90,
Believe it or not,a guy at my job years back in a dealer would pull the wheels off by hand!!
I thought he was nuts but when a car needed its wheel pulled, theyd call him over and in abut 10 seconds he would have it off.He was a little guy too, only 5 foot 7 and maybe 140 lbs...LOL...and he never damaged anything. He did it faster then a mechanic could use the tools to pul it off.
So,I tried this myself on my 86 Firebird once when doing a wheel swap and after about a few minutes of trying,I managed to pull the wheel off by hand, but Ill never do it again...my arms and back were aching for days!!I also thought I was going to break the steering shaft since I had to rock back and forth a bit to do it.WHEW!
