Default Whine from axle

Hey guys, Since it's started getting colder here I've noticed an awful loud whine coming from the rear of the car. I noticed yesterday morning when I backed it out of the driveway that the car didn't seem to be rolling as freely as it had when warm (almost like the e-brake is barely on and hanging it up). Shifting into 2nd is also pretty tough while cold, but I think that's pretty common. Both of these issues go away after about 2 minutes when the car warms up. Any ideas??

Thanks! :seeya

Thanks for your reply. :yesnod:

I just hit 15K recently. I'm guessing that there shouldn't be any major "routine" maintenance on the car that needs to be done at this point. I did notice that this is the 3rd clutch in the car from the owners repair slips. I'm just hoping that this isn't a clutch/trans issue. :(

The whine could also becoming from the differential. Ring and pinion gears could be wearing out.

Not with only 15K miles on them. Is the car a 6spd? There are numerous things that can cause this and make it sound like a diff problem. I would change the oils. If it is really cold where you are, it could be the diff until the oil/grease is getting warmed up, don't worry about it, you will not hurt it.

Did you add the GM diff additive?

Yep, it's a 6 speed

I was actually thinking along those lines as well. Not being mechanically inclined, I thought that sounded too simple!

Hey Brian, how's Mass? :seeya

I haven't tried that as of yet. Dumb question coming, but where do you fill it?

Been good, nice being with my family.

Not so dumb, it's in the side above the where the halfshaft comes out.
If it only happens when you taking a tight slow turn, that's it.

Gee...I see T76 really knows how to help answer a question. ( NOT )

Now, as for the whine, you better check the differential fluid level, as well as trans fluid level.

Damn Jay! Awesome #'s for the new ride!

With you behind the wheel, that's gotta be good enough for that mid 13 second pass you've been looking for all these years! :p:

SAY WHAT?!?????? UM.....whats wrong with this picture...lol...

694 RWHP.....and you are only gonna be able to knock off a mid 13 second pass.....

is this why a vette is a vette and a Supra is ..........well a Supra?
My 1990 will do a mid 13 second....as will a lot of vettes here......and we are not any where near those numbers.....694 RWHP?....hmmmmm....i dunno  :smash:

Relax brother - did you even read my post, I'm just screwing around w/scott and the forum members!

Scott - Yeah, I figure with 700rwhp on tap, I can finally get that 13.2@152mph I've been looking for...you bastard! I'll hit the strip this Spring..what about you tough guy?!?!? Ever gonna let me come out to Detroit and see the ride??

XtremeVette - He's referring to the fact that more than a few high HP supra owners can't turn a good number, esp w/a 6spd - they'll run crazy trap speed - i.e. 12.6@129mph or more...many have a difficult time launching a 6spd due to the low tq #'s - bog or spin many times...just takes alot of practice!
