The automatic shifter detent button when in park is difficult to depress, especially when cold and is lazy in moving back to the up position just about always. Thus I wait or tap on the shifter until the button comes up to remove the key. I've WD40'ed the button without any long term results. This is in my 85 Z51. I've googled for a drawing but my google-fu just isn't getting it. Any advice?
If shifter engages gears without playing with it cable should be ok.Typically spilled drinks on console allows shifter gummed up. I would partially disassemble console to be sure shifter mechanism isn't gummy.

Yes everything works fine except as I noted. I will pull off the cover and check it out. Thanks.

Probably the solenoid that prevents you from shifting out of park unless the brake is depressed. They go bad and stick, especially when cold. Remove the cover above the shifter and take out the solenoid. It is a black cylinder. Unhook one wire and both ends just pop of. Problem should be solved.
I just did a quick fix. Lifted up the console cover hit the shifter with some wd. Removed the button and was able to spray some in there too. Helped immensely. Was also able to reinstall the shift indicator and put the fallen light back in the housing. So wins all around. Thanks for the help and advise.
