I have a 1985 that sat in a field for 16 years and am trying it bring it back to life. It had no keys so I had a set made, then started wondering if this year had the VATS system. I read some where that the system started in 1986, any info on this would help. Also how does the rear hatch work, does the key need to be turned on before hitting the switch? thanks
The 1985 does not have VATS on it thankfully. The rear hatch is opened by one of three switches.one is located in the center console and the other two are located on the door panel when the door is open and you don't need the key in the ignition for it to function

Reason: Misspelled word
The switches on the back edge of the doors will only work if the interior lights are on (as they should be with the doors open). If there's a malfunction of the courtesy lights, those hatch release buttons won't work either.
Thanks for the replies, I have found the release cable and have checked out the solenoid and it works. I don't think my interior lights work will check that tomorrow. Is there a way to flush out the fuel lines? I have removed the fuel pump and filter and replaced both also cleaned the tank, it had some yucky stuff in it, and wondering if I should try to clean the lines. Thanks for the help.
