I was driving the other day and the car quit while I was diving. Was able to steer it to a side street but I didn't pull codes because it restarted immediately and the code cleared. Today I was driving it and it happened again. SES on and stalled while driving. I pulled the codes and the only code was code 24 which FSM says is a "vehicle speed sensor". The troubleshooting chart says nothing about stalling. The code clears after starting and driving it again.
Full disclosure; I have been driving it without the digital dash because it is away to batee being repaired. I just recently repaired a no-start condition by replacing the ICM and have been driving it about a week now.
Having the digital dash out may be the reason I'm getting the code 24 because I think the VSS get's it's ground through the dash. Shouldn't I get code 24 all the time? Why won't it run continuously? From FSM:
6E3-A-44 DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS - FUEL INJECTION (PORT) Y CARLINE
CODE 24 VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR 5.7L "Y" SERIES FUEL INJECTION (PORT) Code 24 will set if: • CKT 437 voltage is constant. • Engine speed between 900 and 4400 RPM. • Less than 2% throttle opening. • Low load condition (low air flow). • Not in park or neutral. • All conditions must be met for 4 seconds.
So I think I have my answer for the code 24 and why it is intermittent since I must meet all of the above conditions to set it. I may have a completely separate problem for the stalling. I think I'll stick the fuel pressure gauge on it and run it for a while.
Update: Idling in the driveway for 20 minutes with the fuel pressure gauge attached before it stalled again with code 24 . The fuel pressure stayed a steady 44psi ... So maybe it needs the IP cluster to run continuously. I guess I'll leave it parked until I get my cluster back from Batee and test again.

Reason: updates
The vss is used for the throttle follower to help return to idle when moving. Definitely need the instrument cluster for that. Stalling in the driveway would be unrelated. Could be a whole host of items, first on my list would be a sticking iac. Also check for frayed low voltage wires at the distributor base (that was my nemesis).
From there it could be a faulty ignition module, fuel pump relay circuit, etc...
I would agree you need cluster. VSS signal goes through cluster to ECM. It seems there are unwanted defaults. Possibly to discourage disconnecting vss to provent rolling miles on odometer.

I got a message from Bryan at Batee.com that the code 24 is normal with the cluster out but it should run otherwise. I'm going to leave it parked until I get the cluster back then test some more. I'll let ya'll know what the verdict is. I'm kind of leaning to your conclusion kenova. It's funny that it doesn't throw the code immediately and when it does the car dies.
My '86 died at most every stop light while i had the cluster out for repair also. My car is a standard
and i don't know if that matters. When i put the cluster back in and reset the Dakota Digital box all
the stalling issues went away.
