Default fuel pump/fuel filter

Have 96 C4 Collector Edition 62000 miles never had any issues until, 2 weeks back started smelling gas but car performed great, several days later I was out on beautiful Georgia day, parked the car shut it off and less than 5 minutes started the car and it started shuttering then shut down completely, it would spin over fine just wouldn't start , I had it towed to my home garage and scheduled to have my mechanic install a fuel filter and fuel pump, I tried everyday for 5 days and it would spin fine just would not crank, today I put the key in and it fired right up, should I go ahead with the fuel filter and fuel pump replacement or should I be looking at something else?

If you smell gas, it *should* be fairly easy to find the source of the smell. Not always, but usually.
Generally, do inspections and diagnostics first and determine what the actual problem is, then proceed. I would not replace the fuel pump or fuel filter unless you have reason to believe they are the problem. Look at the simple and easy stuff first.

Definately do some testing before you start throwing parts at it. That can get expensive. The filter is a good maintenance item to do every year or so as it is super cheap and takes 20min. I would run a pressure test first and then start looking at injectors, regulators, etc.

Check the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator for wet fuel. This will cause fuel to drip into the plenum and cause a fuel smell. Also check your oil dipstick for fuel smell because the system is still pressurized when you cut it off and the fuel drains into the plenum and then down into the engine with a bad fpr.

When was the last time you replaced the filter? If you haven't done that in a while, I would do that regardless. Probably doesn't hurt to see if any codes where thrown in the ECM

If you don't want to do the jumper mode, go grab a reader at Wallyworld https://www.walmart.com/ip/Autel-AL3...-Key/750741374, the 96 supports ODBII.
