My trans did that same thing when the converter valve in the pump was going south. Another symptom was the torque converter would lockup in OD when the trans had not yet warmed to operating temp but closer to operating temp the converter would no longer lockup in OD. Also sounds like line pressure is low in the trans but that would likely be related to the pump failing to do the job. Fairly major repair (have to pull trans). Mine was $1696 at dealer retail but GMPP paid it, otherwise I would have used a cheaper/better shop. If he access to a hypertech power programmer for '96 he could try the "increase shift firmness" option which bumps up line pressure and see if that cures it. If so, then it's the trans pump I would bet.
The clutch slippage is most likely caused by the low line pressure as described, but as to the ASR light and Service Engine Light I'm not sure. Unfortunately you need a scan tool to pull the Diagnostic Error Codes on a '96-- the bent paper clip method to ground pins 4 and 12 of the ALDL connector does not work on '96's to reveal the DTC's, or so I'm told.
