I've replaced the starter on my '89, did not have to lower exhaust. Standard starter, standard exhaust. It is a tight fit, but you can do it. I didn't even have a lift then, just jacked up that side of the car...
The starter was my very first "service". I bought my 89 in 99 and had to replace it during the first year/two. It only had 15-20k miles at that time. I bought a starter from O'Reillys. I've no doubt suppliers/brands could have changed by now. I do remember how easy it was (considering it was the first part replacement on ANY Corvette!). I was done in half and hour. I will have owned my 89 for 20 years in about 2 weeks!!!
If the solonoid didn't come with (bolted to) the starter, I didn't buy one separately. IIRC, the well-documented problem with starters isn't normally the solonoid. If it were, that's all people would be replacing. Conversely, one/two have rebuilt the starter to repair.
