What symptoms are you having?........ there are a lot of things that cause them to be bad, anda lot of things that can be dealt with until replacement time...... :seeya
not really sure. a friend that used to be a gm mechanic was saying he thinks it is. one thing was we hooked his scan tool up and it did not work. plug into another car and it worked fine. and my idle sometimes does right next time it may not. i will have to ask him what else leads him to this conclusion? what are some of the things i should look for my car is an 86
If it's only an idle problem it could be merly an IAC related thing and a good bath may fix it. Some scan tools are pretty finicky and need a battery connection to work....... if it gets no juice it won't respond. Several other things may cause a scan tool to not respond also. I have a monitor 2000 here at school the won't comunicate with my 85 but it works fine on other cars....... who knows?.......... I would want more testing before changing an ECM though :seeya
Your symptoms are not just like mine, but similar. I was having odd codes and strange behavior and the shop I took it to found a bad ground wire on the engine. He showed me the wire and it is on the thermostat housing on my 85. He fixed the ground and all the wierd problems went away. It makes sense because all of the sensors need a ground and the engine needs to be at the same ground potential as the ECM.
Note: Not comm-ing well is not a clear sign of a bad ECM. If the comm circuit dies, that doesn't stop the rest of the ecm from working OK,.... but you wouldn't necessarily know that unless you could comm w/ the ECM. As you can see, it can be a catch-22.
