On my 1990 L98 6 speed I have noticed that I have to depress the clutch down all the way to the floor in order to get the car in either first on reverse. It takes less than an inch of travel to completely disengage the clutch and be on my way. Does this sound like a worn out clutch or something wrong with the master/slave cylinders?
Well, having to press it to the floor sounds normal.
Do you mean within an inch of coming off the floor it is fully engaged?
When my clutch wore out on my old car you could just set your foot on the pedal and shift gears. It made life interesting because you didn't have the whole pedal travel to play with on getting it to move. It was somewhat of an on / off switch.
I'm thinking that maybe you've got some air in the clutch or something. In this case it's working like it is supposed to, but the first half of your pedal travel isn't really doing anything but collapsing an air pocket. I'm guessing that it's never fully releasing and thus why it engages so quickly when you start to let off the floor. You might try bleeding the system and see if it feels any better to you.
is this something that just happened? my first instinct is to say check your hydraulics... something may be weak. Difficulty in shifting to 1st/reverse is a symptom of a weak slave/master cylinder or low fluid. When was the last time you serviced it?
I just got the car in July, it has always been a little tough to get it in first/reverse untill it warms up. That is right an inch off the floor and the clutch is disengaged.
