Default Steering yoke cover

i just finished swapping out my rack and pinion ( I have a four post lift and fought this job anyone out there that has done it on your back with the car on stands I don’t know how you did it). There is a metal cover over the u joint and yoke. I can’t seem to get mine tight again, it now spins freely and rattles. Does this cover serve any real purpose that I am not seeing? I have seen other cars without it.

Mine on my car is loose as well. It does not move a whole lot other than when the steering wheel is turned so I left it alone.

I did change out my steering rack on jack stands and yes it did suck!

Well I’m going to go ahead and take mine off. I just don’t see what it’s supposed to protect.
