Default 1988 C4 A/C issue

Hi All,

I have seen this issue on other threads but I wanted to start a new one because I'm not sure if it is the same problem that others are having.

I just bought my 88 C4 and it is in GREAT condition, other than the A/C "Cold" button just stopped working. So, I'm not sure if it is the control head itself or the vacuum system. The button was working up until this past week. Unfortunately the heat button still works, so the temp was increases to 90 degrees and I can't get it to come back down. So now, hot air is coming through the vent system and it gets a little toasty in there. Luckily it's been cold out.

So, my questions is, could this be the control head itself or the vacuum line? I don't want to be chasing my tail if it's possibly one or the other.

Thanks.

I bought mine a few weeks ago and have the C68 climate control system. Everything worked when I bought it. One day I am driving and it is warm in the cabin from being in the sun. The temp selector quit working right. It would go up, but not come down. I know that I will need to pull it and clean the contacts via the youtube video that is out there on it. In the morning when everything was cold again, it worked fine. The other day it was again warm in the cabin and it stops going down again. The next morning, cold, fine again.

Just my experience, YMMV. I'm sure it's the contacts in the control unit needing cleaning.

Thanks for the tip. I will have to do that this weekend. I can't get it to work for anything. I'll post the results after I clean it. I just hope that is the issue.

Sure thing. Here's the video I was speaking of. I'll be using Contact Cleaner and a q-tip rather than a pencil eraser.

Thank you for that. I hope mine is that easy since my unit is just a little older that. So I'm sure it will be somewhat different.

In the meantime try disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes then reconnecting it. That may reset the temperature setting.

I also just recently purchased, a 1987 corvette don't know much about it yet but the climate control unit doesn't display the digital number doesn't show or do anything with AC or heat. Not sure if its the unit or the actuator. The unit gets power all the lights light up on it.. any ideas or suggestions.

Best thing you ca both do is pull the C68 unit and send it off to Bryan at Batee.com for repairs. You will be glad you did. They are not very hard to remove. Or you can call him first and discuss the problem with him, he is the expert on these climate control units.

Ok, This weekend I pulled the AC Head unit and cleaned it per the video, but the cold button still does not work. I was able to reset the default temp back to 75 after disconnecting the battery. So now we are not getting engine heat coming through the vent. So THANK YOU RUU for that advice.
So my next question is, would the lack of Freon affect the ability to lower the temp? I am going to get an R134 conversion on it. But right now, there is no R12 in they system. Since 75 is the default temp, is it possible that once I do the conversion and charge the system that that control would come back?
I just want to make sure the unit is working properly before converting and charging.

Thank you,
