My 96 6spd has a malfunctioning handbrake. When you pull up on it, there is no "ratcheting or clicking". It will not set. It's as though the ratcheting pawl device is not engaging just allowing the handle to move up and down without actually locking
What are your thoughts?
The grease that is used to lubricate the hand brake mechanism has turned hard (age and grease contamination) and is preventing the pawl from moving.
Disassemble the plastic cover over the parking brake mechanism (fairly easy to do, two screws and one on the handle, you may have to remove the bottom seat cushion to get a Phillips screwdriver on them). Then put a rag underneath the assembly and spray some penetrating fluid on the pawl and ratcheting gears.
You will have to manually move the pawl to get the fluid to penetrate.
But this should fix it.
