With the mods I have in my sig. I ran a best of 13.98@96.81mph. My goal is too with a stock motor run a 12.9. My plans are Hooker super comp. headers, AFPR, a transgo shift kit, and a 2300-2500 torque conventor from Pro-Street Intruder. Can a 12.9 be accomplished with these mods or is it going to take alot more? Thanks
I was looking at drag radials too, but I was hoping to do this on street tires , right now I can pull low 1.9 60'. But I have also heard of people dropping .3-.4 with DR.
The headers over a stock front Y might give .2sec, you might see another .3 from the TC and shift kit and the AFPR will give a little as you no doubt need a little more fuel by then.
If you can get one of those cold Feb days at Brandenton along with a high baro you may get to low 13s but I don't thing that will be enough for 12s.
Anyway allow yourself some time to learn to launch with that TC; try launching a few hunderd below stall for best results and stage as shallow as possible.
Vic'89 and 65Z01 have similar combos. Vic has clicked a 12 second pass a time or two, 65z01 is on the verge. If I had to do it over again, and could limit it to a bolt on 12 sec car...I'd be duplicating their package. Believe me, I see these cars approx once a month, they're durable and their times are consistent.
That all depends on the vehicle specifics. You have a low RPM torque motor, stalling at a higher RPM will only help but so much, but it will help. I just can't see .5 seconds worth unless you did smoe mods to make high rpm power...like porting the intake/siamese the intake base runners, change cam ( roller preferred ), change valve springs and do a custom ECM chip. Do all of that...12's would be easy.
With those gears, I dont think the mods you are planning will get you into the 12s. If you do the gears and everything else you said, you have a shot at 12s. IHO
I thought that lower gears would hurt performance due to the fact that the L98 doesn't make much high rpm power and thats why they came with the 2.59 or 3.07 gear
I agree that if you went went too high with the gearing, you'll be spent too soon, but I just think with a TC and some 3.45s, if you can make it stick, you could get close to 12s with the mods you have planned. Even 3.07s would help. Maybe do a little home porting work on the TPI to get a few more rpms. I could be completely wrong, but I just dont think the 2.59s will get you there fast enough. You're looking to shave off a whole second and every little bit will help.
Looks like I've just have to save a little more $ for some gears now, I'mm just trying to plan every thing out before I do anything. I want to make a very compatible set up, yet still leave a little room for improvements
Ill be doing much of the same as you are with the 86 while I build up another motor. We have similar cars, except I have 3.07 gears in mine. Ill be installing TPIS headers and ported/semi-polished plenum and runners in the next few months and then it's off to the tracks (if it aint closed by then). Ill keep you posted to the times I run. Only thing that I may not be able to do is a TC (money) :( Good luck and hope you see some 12s.
Go to KDSperformance.com there TC are priced pretty good they say they fit the 700r4 so they sould fit. The one I'm looking at is a 2300-2500rpm for $179. I think I will wait on the gears and finish the other mods first then get a dyno run to help me decide what gear ratio to go.
definitely need those gears.. 2.59's will give you low rpm's and better gas mileage, but does not help you get out of the hole and run a fast 1/4 mile without serious mods.. :)
If you going to buy and install a TC, get a real TC like the Vigilante. If you have the original stock TC, it should stall to 2200-2400 already.
I agree here. You get what you pay for. Buy a quality product the first time. It'll save that tranny from frying and you won't be replacing the same part twice.
