Default gas tank cables / tethers

on the 86 4+3....

gas tank has two nylon coated (look to be 3/8) wire cables that loop around it as a loose fitting restraining device i think as a type of restraining backup should an impact attempt to send the gas tank into the car.

mine were rotted out and id like to replace.

i can only find two references to these on the forum, one saying dont worry about them and the other saying keep them on.

ive just left home depot and they do sell the nylon covered cable but id be fabricating a loop termination and building an anchor plate to sandwhich them down because the factory part comes with a plated termination with a hole that slips over a stud. i couldnt find a similar fitting and even if i did i would doubt any sort of crimping im capable of would be structural.

anybody found a plave where these can be ordered or similar.

ideas?

There is a guy selling parts in the parts for sale forum, he wanted $10 for them..
If not, you can get galvanized cable from a number of places (tractor supply maybe) that can also cut to length and install and crimp the ends. If you really wanted to you could use straps which is more then adequate for the job they perform.. Believe you can run them around the metal cross-member instead of the sway bar studs.
When i did my 88, i was lucky to be able to salvage them. If mine were not usable, not sure id worry about it. Its job is to keep the tank in place in a severe accident. But im sure someone will jump down my throat for saying that so.....Good luck!
