I am in the process of building a 388 stroker , (nearly compleate and estimate 450-500 HP) and plan on hooking it to a 4+3 trans. (3.07 Dana 44)I am curious as wheather or not the trans will hold up under full throttle acceleration (when the tires finally hook up). Any advice ?
Re: Anybody running a 4+3 behind a stroker ???? (Ky_Vette)
Mine still works just fine. I've probally got about 70+ runs on mine with slicks. The only gripe I have about it is that they don't seem to like to be power shifted.

Ky: The 4 in the 4+3 is a strong unit (ST-10). You probably wont do any damage to it even trying...
As for the +3 part... Just be careful of when you put it into OD... On my car I am wiring the OD unit outside the computer, so it will only turn on when I tell it too, no other time... So that I can make sure its never under strong load/accel.
You may want different gears, depending on use of car... With LT1 intake, off hand I would guess 3.54s or 3.73's would be most likely canidates... (3.54 is going to be my choice on mine, with SuperRam)

Sorry about that ( ) stealing your name, even though I'm in NC I'm originally from Owensboro, and here in Carolina there's not many people advertising for Kentucky (think Duke might have something to do with it ... my wife works ther and wears UK stuff during the tournies.)
PS: I'll be in Beaver Dam next Friday for opening day of Deer Gun season.

Thanks VetteRacer, I'm planning on wiring the second gear switch plug (jumpering it) so the ECU will think the trans is always in second, that way the ECU won't automatically go to OD unless I push the button. As to the gears, I'll wait and see but you're probably right, I'm thinking the 3:73 would make a good rustang, C5 eater ! :smash:

NP. A note on the computer/switch. I am going to be having an electrical smart friend take a look at the diagram and pick out a relay that will work right. I will run it straight from the switch on the shifter to the OD unit (well with the relay inline). So that the computer has no say in what goes on. The way I plan it is that when the car is started, the OD is off untill you hit the button, no kickdown, no temp issues, etc. Its on only when I want it, and off when I dont want it. I only plan to use it for freeway driving, and maybe some bigger track road racing.
Other wires on the tranny that I am going to have are the reverse lights and speed sensor. The gear sensor is not going back on.

Why don't you remove the Tan/Black wire from terminal A7 on the ECM and then run another wire to it that switches 12v on and off.
C7 which is Black/Light Blue is the Overdrive Request. I think that is the one O/D switch runs to so when the ECM sees 12v hit that terminal it fires up the 12v on A7 to the O/D relay.

You guys have the stock shifter still?
This spring after the motor goes back in I will be putting on a Hurst shifter. Wondering what you guys ahve
I am in the process of installing a Hurst Ram Rod (No longer available), to get rid of the 'sloppy' factory shifter. The Ram Rod set's higher on the tail shaft than regular comp. plus shifter and had reinfoced shifter rods to prevent flexing, it is a VERY close gate shifter. Had one on my 427 '68 Camero. Took a while to find but now it's mine. :D
Thanks for the info. I'll have to look at my electrical diagrams, but sounds good to me. As I am also changing out the shifter and will have to 'work around' the stock switch.
Re: Anybody running a 4+3 behind a stroker ???? (Ky_Vette)
Let me know how it goes with the shifter and what problems to watch out for when I do my swap. I planned to use a Hurst Competition shifter. I don’t want to alter the console.
In addition, I saw in Summit or Jegs that Hurst has push button sifter handle to turn on and off any 12 volt item and thought this would work well for the 4+3 OD. I am not sure how to hide the power line to the OD though
