Can't connect scanning software to 165ecm

I can't get Datamaster or Moates software to connect on my Thinkpad 760el, Win98, 133mhz, 40mb. I can connect with Winaldl. I have Steve Ruse's Cable and disconnected the ir port on the Thinkpad. I'm using a 10k ohm resistor across pins A+B . I tried two different ecm's and they won't connect. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think part of the problem is that the ecm won't stay in aldl mode. I know it is in that mode because the idle is steady at 1000rpm. As soon as I try to connect, it drops out of that mode and the idle drops. The question now is how to keep it locked in aldl mode?

Is anyone using Datamaster or Craig Moates Software with a 165 ecm? What cable and computer are you using? I have tried my desktop too and I can't connect. The ECM drops out of ALDL mode when the software tried to connect.

I don't connect to that type of ECM but I use datamaster and an AKM cable without any troubles. You've eliminated the the computer so it's got to be the cable or the ECM.

I use Moates' on my 165 ECM with a Win95 laptop with an AKM cable. I have found that I have to be in DOS mode. It doesn't work for long in a DOS Shell in Windows. Eventually just freezes up. I also found it was important to boot up the computer with the cable connected to the serial port and the ALDL connector.

When did you start your car, before or after you booted the computer?
Did you start the car before or after loading Craig's program?

It doesn't seem to matter when I start the car, the cable just needs to be connected at both ends before the computer is booted and everything will work just fine.

Problem Solved :cheers:

I converted from the 870ecm to the 165. The 870 uses a connection from the serial data line to the Burnoff Module. This interferes with data transmission. Disconnecting the Burnoff module allows Datamaster and the Moates software to connect.

I will need to replace the burnoff module with relays but this will be easy! Another option may be to add a diode from the serial line to the burnoff module and this may prevent interference with data transmission. I will post what works.
