My understanding is that the part the grease nipple screws into should protrude further if the ball joint is in good shape? FWIW I can't get any grease into this one either.

Jack the car up and rest the lower control arm on a block of wood so that the weight of the car in on the control arm. Now grab the tire and try and pull the bottom of it towards you, if it chucks back and forth, at all, then the ball joint is bad.
Lower outer ball joint - good? Replace?
