I've got a very nearly stock 1985 manual and I'm considering a cat delete. I live where this won't be an issue but I'm wondering if this will cause me issues elsewhere in the car, with sensors or something. Never done a cat delete before so just want to understand what I'll gain (hopefully a better breathing engine) and what I need to be careful of.
You will have zero issues. If you really want to help your car remove the pre cats (I think 85's had them- my old 89 did) and remove the OEM cat. They are old technology that is super restrictive. If you want to keep your emissions, put a new, hi-flow cat on your mid section and you will be good. With that, you can keep all your smog stuff in place. But, if you have the pre cats, remove those first- there is no down side.
The cat on there is not original. No idea if it's high flow but the PO must have had it replaced. I was under there doing u joints and found myself wondering if I even need the thing. Would love to just straight pipe the whole thing.
Edit: the Mufflers are dynomax. I doubt those are stock either.
85 should have one main cat. I bet you could take your old rear Y pipe, cut at the straight sections after it Ys out, bolt it to the front Y pipe and then add some straight pipes to fill in the gaps.
What do I do with the small pipe that runs from the cat up to the front?
Plug it or remove it. From what I remember, this is part of the emissions system pumping O2 into the cat to help it "warm" faster. Really don't need it.
