Default Anyone ever replaced side window glass? please help.

This weekend I am going to tackle replacement of both side windows. Mine are both scratched beyond repair on my 89 vert. Are there any tricks before I get started? Do I just remove door panels and start removing the windows or do I need to check for anything special? Thanks in advance.

well on my 84... I had them out before: you just take off the interior panel, that little metal plate (you might have some sound insulation as well), and then take off around 6 bolts that hold the pane in. After that, it will slide right out the top of the door (with a little positioning). If memory serves, I had to turn the glass at a steep angle to wedge it out of the notches in the top of the door frame (you'll see what I mean when you get there). It's pretty straight forward- good luck!

On my '88 I had to take off the inside door panel, the weather proof insultion, the tin plate at the rear of the door and roll the window up far enough to access all the bolts that hold the glass to the regulator.

I didn't remove the glass but did the driver side regulator.

I did not take my windows out when I did my window motors, but I did note that the window has a "stop" bolted thru it at the front that limits its top position. It is about 2" long and has a blind nut on the back side that takes a spanner wrench to remove and an allen head on the front side.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I would think that stud would have to be removed to get the window out the top.

BTW; mine is an 85 so I'm not sure if yours is exactly the same.

Also, if your windows are scratched in vertical lines towards the front (like mine are), see if you can replace the "pad" which rubs on the window in that area. It looks to me like this pad has a felt covering which loads up with grit which then scratches the heck out of the glass.

Good Luck!
Mike
