I have been working on a friend's 96 Coupe with an A4 transmission. Today I replaced the fuel pump to fix the no start issue and get it driving for the first time since he bought it a month or two ago. I never met the past owner so I don't know how long it sat before that. As of right now it starts and idles wonderful, revs fine and feels strong but when accelerating it lurches like it is unsure of what gear to be in. If you ease into it and stay under say 1/4 pedal( ish wasn't data logging) it changes gears just fine. If you roll into it slowly it gets up and goes just fine but if you open the taps, even a little, the car lurches like a really hard down shift.
I have HP tuners available but cant seem to find trans info and being an OBD2 car I'm not as familiar with what other programs I could use to try and diagnose without going to a shop. Thanks in advance.
From a dead it runs to about 4k lurches, it gets back and pulls right away but I dont stay in it because it's not my car to break. Haven't tried power braking and wont be able to get back to the car for a few days sorry
Trans fluid is proper level and a fresh red color so it like like someone recently changed it. Manually changing the gears doesnt remedy the lurching and it's not rpm dependent. When rolling it is as soon as you give it a decent amount of gas regardless of your speed gear or rpm. The 4k was the highest I got it to go in 1st before lurching. Checked the sensors with HPtuners and everything engine wise looked correct. Tps responded properly, map the same and MAF. Temp sensors are reading within reason too
