Default self etch primer or not

hi, 1985 corvette restoring interior...want to paint the metal interior door handles with SEM TRIM BLACK... i believe the handles are steel but not sure...they are quite worn but still have a lot of factory paint... is it necessary to remove all factory faint and to
use SEM self etch primer...my plan was to use: (1) SEM SOLVE (2) 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper leaving existing remaining paint (3) SEM SOLVE again then (4) TRIM BLACK. not sure whether i need to use self etch primer or not. thanks

i did mine by wiping with isopropyl alcahol and spraying them. i did them out of the car, i drilled the rivets out and replaced them after repainting. i may have used acetone and wiped it actually.

here is thread. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...986-doors.html

post 44 shows handles.

I don't know if you self etch pot metal or not? Because that's what they're made of.. Some cheap alloy.

Your product data sheet should address it if that is the route you want to go. You can overthink things like this sometimes, too.

Personally, I just scuffed with a red pad and some wax & grease remover and hit them with rustoleum because it wears well. They look fine.

400 wet sand might be too smooth of a surface for paint to stick well, also i thought self etching primer is for bare metal.. just use red scotch brite pads and scuff it down smooth. i am sure they will turn out just fine
