Default Question for the engine builders

I have a crate 383, factory roller cam block, 224/230, .510 lift hyd roller. I put in a DUI electronic large cap HEI about 5000 miles ago. I removed the distributor yesterday for no real reason, and found that the gear teeth were grooved badly. It was not bottoming on the oil pump shaft, and the pump is a Melling select std. pressure and volume. I verified with the cam mfr. that the cam did not require a bronze or composite dist gear. Now the question. Should I be using an oil with Zinc additives even though it's a roller lifter motor? I have been using Mobil 1. I have a OEM Melonized gear on order, I have no idea what the DUI gear is.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

You could slot distributor housing to allow positive oiling of distributor and cam gears.

just my thought; but I always use oem cams with the oem distributor gear; if you have a chevy "crate" engine, I'd definitely use the oem stuff. Mixing and matching from different manufacturers just adds another (needless) variable....sure sometimes it works and may even be an improvement. Or not.
