If it's an Lt1, the timing is controlled by the computer.
The only timing that can be physically set is b/w the crank and the cam. This is done w/ the cam over off via the timing chain. Adjusting this would cause serious issues.
The only other timing that can be adjusted is via the ECU.
If it is running a carb I doubt the computer is still controlling the timing.
Find top dead center on the #1 cylinder and mark the balancer where the pointer is. This is your 0° mark. When running at idle, you can adjust the distributor by turning it clockwise and counterclockwise until you reach the desired advance setting via a timing light. If the pointer doesnt have marks on it either you may need a timing light that can advance the strobe built in. This of course applies if the distributor is in the back of the intake and "conventional" as TOM400CFI suggested.
If it is running off the opti then you can still check the timing using the method above, but adjustments will require tuning via a computer.
