Better do the homework. Have the right tools. Develop your skills on some practice heads, ie salvage. It's a time consuming process, unskilled, you screw up heads. Properly done, potential payoff. Heads/valves/cams, that's where it's at. You should consider this part of an integrated process, ie air flow, fuel, computer tuning, etc.
Try Barnes and Noble. Several books deal with SBC engine work. $45 in books can save $1000 or more. Video tapes, tool kits, lots of stuff. With proper research, practice, good tools, can be done. Or, just remove the heads, grab your wallet, and hand em to someone else. If you go down this path, be sure to do further research and see what else will change.
