Default Distributor Position

My 84 has an acceleration issue and I have been doing some research and troubleshooting thanks to this forum, youtube and the FSM. I did notice a huge difference between the distributor position on my car vs. others I see online. I can't find my timing gun (i think my brother took it and he is on vacation) to verify the timing, however the car turn on perfect and idles perfect. My only issue is when accelerating. What is your take on the position. ON just about all photos and videos I see online, the distributor is almost parallel with the rubber seal. On my car its completely different. I would think this should look almost identical on all 84's with a few degrees variation. Is something wrong here or is this normal?

My car.

Yes, your distributor is not in its ideal position, but this, by itself, has no detrimental effect on the operation of your engine. The firing order and the ignition timing can be set correctly in this position, and that's what matters. If your engine starts and runs well, your firing order must be correct, and your ignition timing must be pretty close to correct. That missing timing light should answer your question about the timing. Factory spec is 6* BTDC, but most of us '84's run 8 to 10*.

As Hot Rod stated, the distributor's position is cocked somewhat but it shouldn't have an affect on the motor. It is easily rectified by pulling the distributor and moving the rotor one or two teeth counterclockwise. Thus will straighten out the distributor. Make sure you use a timing light before and after.
