Roll Bar info needed
OK, I know this has been discussed before, but does anyone have info on roll bars that will still allow top stowage in a coupe. I'm not looking for a harness bar, but an actual 4 point (or more) roll bar.
Will this one allow for top storage? I got a refferal from someone on this site, but haven't bought one so I really couldn't tell you if storage is possible. It's http://www.swracecars.com/rolbarlist.html .
Why would you want to mess up a stock corvette....with a rollbar???
Tell me...as I don't see it.....keep it clean..and stock....
Just my humble opionion????? But Then ??????????????? :blueangel: :blueangel: :blueangel:

I don't know a custom rollbar that's done right only enhances the car, not to mention makes it safer and stiffer.
I can't wait till my car is fast enough to require a roll bar.
It is a safety issue. Folks that put one in are not keeping their cars in the garage, covered and waxed. Well, I guess there are folks that do that with a roll bar. In addition to stiffening up the car and providing roll over protection, roll bars are also a great way to attach harnesses to the car. And it provides a place to mount a video camera, to relive those laps. I regularly see speeds over 120mph and to do that repeatly with only a standard seat belt is just plain stupid. Also, when people see the roll bar out on the street, they don't mess with me. My wife has followed me and says that it really gets a lot of looks. Finally, I think it looks very cool too.
The only problem with a roll bar is in a parade. It makes it very difficult for even a teenager to sit up there the whole time! But they do have a great view!

Oldguy,

Exactly, this car is turning into a race car. I plan on running every NCCC high speed event I can make it too next year (as well as low speeds and 1/4 mile events). I also run quite a bit at our local roadcourse for lapping days. As such, I'd feel a lot safer with a rollbar. Also, the car is currently NCCC group II, but I plan on doing some things that will push it into group III (C5 brakes for instance). NCCC group III requires a rollbar, so I need to go ahead and get one before making those changes. Also, it should really help stiffen the car up, which is really my only big comlaint with the C4.
Be sure to check out the sanctioning body's specs on rollbar requirements. You don't want to build something they won't like. And if you are going to race then remember its function over looks when it comes to rollbars. My son and I have built a couple of toyota offroad vehicles and my question to him on the rollbar was 'do you want it to save your life in a rollover or look good?' He was real happy when the 6 point rollcage we built (followed nascar design) saved him in a multi side rollover down a hill. He walked away from it. Scared heck out of everyone there though.
On the picture of the rollbar in the earlier post I'd have to rethink about where those removable points are for the side impact bars. In a hard crash they will just become pivot points that can start moving. Moving them all the way back to the rear main hoop would help a little.
not to mention makes it safer and stiffer.
I can't say that I have ever seen a C4 with its factory rollbar/hoop caved in. And I've seen some nasty carnage in pictures!
Dragracr,
S&W used to make a sloppy roll bar until last winter. They used my 86' coupe for a templet and have come up with a really nice one. It's a bolt in that ties into the rear swing are mounts at the bottom. The rearward facing bars don't allow the top to be stored, but they can easily change that. (not a problem for me) Give them a call at 1-610-948-7303
Good luck,
Joe
Thanks, but the picture that I posted is a custom bar that I built myself and installed, so I no longer need one anymore. Glad to hear that they are making a quality bar now. :seeya
