Default Tough decision - 3 angle valve job?

Well my engine is almost done... the valve guides are worn on the L98 Aluminum heads so I am sending it in for new ones.

Should I get a 3 - angle valve job too? Is it worth it? Cost is about $100-$150.

Thanks!!!

A 3-angle or full radius job. Opt' for the radius if they can do it. :yesnod:

3-angle is exactly how it sounds, the valve seat is cut 3 times to give the air a slightly smoother journey into the chambers. While it is easier for the air to travel over it still has 2 sharp points between the angles to overcome. I have a 3-angle job on my heads. A full radius job has no angles at all and is a smooth transition the entire way. One big curve.

AHhh IC... well how does the valve sit flush against the valve seat then if it's a continuous curve? Do they modify the valve as well??

The entire valve doesn't have to as long as it mates flush at the edges of the valves/seats. :)

You'd be crazy not to fork over the money for a good valve job. It can make a significant difference in flow numbers, and is relatively cheap. Don't start cutting corners now!

Ahh... :) Thanks for the response. I really don't want it back on if there was something else I could do.

I told them I want Bronze Valve Guides, 3-Angle Valve Job and springs, retainers, valves all installed and supplied.

$400 bucks. Not bad.

Thanks for the explanation Scorp!

If you want to shell out more cash, ask for titanium retainers. :) Lighter, allows quicker reving and less chance of valve float.

If you're adding Al heads get them pocket ported, 3 or 5 angle valve job, etc. And add a set of quality valves: SS, necked, back-cut and swirl polished.

The Ti retainers and 10deg locks are also a good idea, as Scorp mentioned.

definatly go for it, manley makes a 1.94/1.50 valve called the pro-flo that run $152 for everything from summit. i'd heavly suggest buying them as they are a somewhat cheap upgrade. i wish i would have taken pictures of the difference between stock and those. the pro-flos are a forged, stainless, necked down, swirl polished valve. i managed to get 225cfm@.500 lift on the intake and 190cfm@.500 lift on the exhuast doing some port work in my garage and using those valves undercut & with a 3 angle job. that's a 15-20% increase over stock.

Hmmm.... VERY interesting!! If I go with the Pro Flo... can I install that myself? I am in a time crunch... so I can't wait to buy the Pro Flo, then send the heads in. So if I send the heads in now and get the 3-angle and valve guides, can I install the springs, retainers and valves? Thanks! :)

Scorp... about how much more would I need to shell out? :D

summit can do overnight shipping very cheap, like under $20, it would be nice to undercut the valve & do the job with it, helps flow too. you also could just have the valves sent to the machine shop. excuse me, they are called the race-flo :) here's your part numbers man-11522-8 for the intake and man-11521-8 for the exhaust. i have no idea if you've replaced your pushrods but comp has a very affordable set of hardened ones that i'm even using for $35 bucks, if you want those they are part number cca-7812-16, this is the correct size for a stock length valve and L98 d-port head casting with roller cam.

Ok! Wow, thanks! I printed all the info out from Summit so I can order. It's $152 for the valves and $30 for the push rods. But then I will still need springs and retainers.

Hmmm....

So the shop needs the valves there while they do the work to better match it?

Thanks!

a good 3 angle job usually involves undercutting the valve it's self & rolling the edges, it definatly would be a good idea to have them there also. summits shipping is also inexpensive so there should be no problem, im me back or post back the cam your using & i can give you an idea for the spring & retainer, also what rpm are you going to spin the engine to?

Nice Scorp! :) Is your engine back together?

gtsyellow... I answered on IM but for anyone watching this thread I don't know exacly what cam is in there yet. We do know it's aftermarket though because my car lopes and has low vacuum and pulls really hard on the top end which X-Fires are not supposed to do.
