Default C4 bucking under load

When driving in 6sp if I try to accelerate the car bucks. If I put a load on the engine without dropping down a gear the motor bucks. If I pick up the speed by increasing the RPMs by lowering a gear its fine.
Stock motor and 6sp tranny. I don't drive it very much.

That's kinda how a manual works if RPMs at too low. A preventive maintenance tune up may help. Plugs and wires, cap and rotor if a L98. Optispark would be more involved, since water pump has to come off to change.

It might also be a failing EGR valve.

They kick in when there is heavy loading... so unless you are trying to accelerate from 25 mph in 6th (which is impossible)... What speeds ARE you doing?

Assuming this is the way you've always driven it and this is new, I'd start by checking the fuel pressure.

I've had this happen when the cats went bad on me. The exhaust was restricted, and under acceleration the car felt like it was fighting to go faster.
