Default Torque Gained

Anyone know how much torque I should pick up changing 2.59 gears to 3.73 gears? Everyone talks about how much differance it makes but do we have any real numbers without other mods to consider?

I read that you should gain about a tenth of a second in the quarter for every two tenths change in gear ratio. 2.59 to 3.73 is a change of 1.14. This divided by 2 (for two tenths) is 0.57 seconds ???? Am I doing this right and how does this equate out in torque values?

You dont really gain torque numbers from it. You just get to feel the torque you already have.

True torque at the carnk remains the same but at the rear wheels it increases as the ratio of the gear change.

On the down side you will come out of each gear quicker, resulting in loss of torque. So 1/4 mi times may not change much.

Nickd, a forum member on here with a 94, went from 2.59 to 3.54 and increased his 1/4 times by .5 seconds and mph by 4mph, I believe is what he posted. Now I believe it was with drag radials as well. The increase is going to depend on if the gear change causes a traction problem as well.

Yeah, thanks for the responces guys. I knew that the output torque from the engine would not increase but I was wanting the increase at the rear wheels. I am confused by the answers though because most of you in the forum have changed gears and have had all great things to say but one responce here was that it could make my car slower.

Cheers
Jody

COULD GO SLOWER IF YOU ARE SPINNING AND CANT HOOK IT UP
id say 2-3 tenths are realistic if you dont lose any traction

Well I'm certain it'll make your car FEEL quicker. Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if you gained 2 tenths. For quicker acceleration it's all about matching the rear-end ratio to your combination and your torque curve. (And being able to hook up, as mentioned above) On a L98 you have to be careful not to gear the car such that you spend all your time above 3000 RPM, because the motor runs out of breath. You have to gear to make the most of the low-RPM power. With your LT1 you have more rev-range to work with and 3.73's will probably work for you. I would think that's about as low as you'd want to go, however.

in an LT1, youd prolly gain a couple tenths on average from the stock gearing, only reason youd be slower is if you dont know how to launch and end up spinnin the tires

only downside would be some small loss in mpg

Thanks for all the comments/advice guys. I hope I can find a decent dana 44 to replace the dana 36 and get some 3.73 gears installed. Thanks :yesnod:
