Default remote woes!

Hiya all! I am having a 'mystery' problem with my '96. When I got it, the remote worked fine. I would get near the car and like magic, pop, the door would unlock. After about 4 weeks, the automagic door gadget stopped working. I would walk away, only to return to an unlocked car. I would walk up, only to have to unclock it using the key. As a note, I went to the dealer to get a new remote (I only had one) and to have both the old remote and the new reprogrammed on a new 'frequency'. (Long story) This worked for about a week. However, again, the car has just quit 'listening'. Can anyone shed some light on this on and off again problem?

Same problem with both remotes? Have you replaced the battery in the remote? Read the owner's manual and "program" it yourself. See if the problem returns.

Read your manual. If you use the buttons to unlock the door, you will turn off the pke. I too had this problem until I finally deciphered the manual. It is not easy to understand. Finally quit using the buttons (I can't open the door for my wife anymore) and just let the doors unlock automatically.

I stand to be corrected if anyone has a better understanding of the manual than I do.

Ron: you can program the system to open either the drivers door only, or both. Your manual covers it, but as I recall, it's done by sitting in the car with the key NOT in the ignition and holding down the door button on the fob until the door locks cycle. It's a "toggle" function so each time you cycle tem you'll go from drivers door only to both. Good luck. Cire96

If you want to activate or de-activate the PKE hold the door button down on your fob until you see & hear the locks cycle. If the system is armed the Passive Keyless entry will light up in the lower left corner of the dic when you turn on the key. If it doesn't light up then re-cycle again.

If you want to select which doors open put key in ignition, donot turn on & press door button until you get the results you want. :chevy

But you can not use the buttons to unlock the door. Just let the remote do it by itself.

Please read your owner's manuals. The locks will work both passive and with the buttons at the same time.

If you cycle the locks by holding the button down with the key not in the ignition, it will disable the passive entry.

If you cycle the locks by holding the button down with the key in the ignition, it will toggle the passive functions.

When using the button to unlock, press the button and release. Do not hold it down until the locks cycle.
