Read somewhere on here autocrossers are fine with the automatic, stay in 1 or 2 most of the time.
The hot ticket for auto-x in a C4 seems to be an auto with 2.59 gears. Indeed you can stay in 1 or 2 on most courses. But that's probably the only time 2.59s are fun, otherwise they kind of suck.
I was gung-ho about a ratchet shifter in my C4 LT1 for a while but never did anything. To my knowledge none of the usual suspects like B&M make a drop-in for a C4 although there was someone on this forum who did some interior mods to make one fit an L98 C4. As long as you can fasten down the shifter and make it look the way you want, you can get a linkage from B&M to make it work with pretty much any transmission including the 700r4. The one on here looked pretty cool, and the **** sat fairly high, close to the steering wheel like a rally car.
