Default Which swhich is which?...3 Temperature sensors, one problem...

Howdy Folks, I'm dealing with what i think is a similar problem to another thread on coolant temp sensors...maybe someone here can help?

This issue is for my C4 1987 L98:

On the dashboard, my coolant temperature is stuck reading 320F! (160C) (hot or cold engine) which is impossible of course...I've used my Laser gun on the Rad and Hoses and the actual temp when running is the normal 190F-198F.

So obviously the sensor that sends the message to the coolant gauge has crapped out.

I had bought a TX3 Temperature sensor last week but i have become hesitant to replace that one as i have heard comments here on CF that says this sensor meant for the front of the block sends info to the ECM....and if that was malfunctioning, the idle and engine performance would be poor, (it runs fine) so seems to me that is not the sensor i need to swap out?

As the car runs fine, and only the dashboard gauge is incorrect, what is the correct sensor to replace?

hope any of you gents can help...
thx

Let's see if this helps.

Sensor on right side of engine between cyl 6&8 - Temperature display on dash
Sensor on left front of engine between 1&3 - Aux fan sensor (if equipped)
Sensors on front of engine near thermostat housing - 1) ECM engine temperature sensor and 2) Cold start sensor that has a Bosch FI type connector on it.

Looks as though you want the first sensor if your display is incorrect. Also look at the wiring as it runs right next to the exhaust in that area.

Makes sense to me!
Thx...!

Hmm, But now I cant find any single wire (green?) around that area that would hook up to it..??
I went under and found a green wire that seems to run up to (and past) the starter...very tight quarters so I have to get the Vette up a little higher to be able to maneuver my hands up in there.

more later...
much appreciated...
