I had a little water pump problem where coolant and water went everywhere:cry, I fixed that problem however, now I have another. My primary fan started to squeak. Can I just spray some WD-40 on it or is there something else I should try???
With the engine and key off, try spinning the fan by hand and see how it feels. If it feels rough and squeaks, I'd replace the motor now. It's sealed, so I don't think you could do much even if it feels ok. My primary fan started squeaking and I didn't do anything until it stopped working. I figured out it wasn't working when the car overheated in traffic one day. It didn't do any damage, but I was very lucky.
The problem is that the motor starts drawing more and more current. Eventually, it draws enough current to blow the fuse link, cutting power to the motor. Then in addition to replacing the motor, you have to replace the fuse link. This is NOT just a fuse. It's a thinner section of wire in the wiring harness that melts when it gets too hot. There are a whole bunch of fuse links behind the battery tray. So you have to remove the battery, figure out which fuse link it is, cut the old one out, and solder a new one in. It's much easier to just replace the motor now!
I'm not sure how much different a ZR1 is in terms of fan motor replacement, but it was a bit of a pain in the LT1. I unbolted the radiator support and was able to slide the radiator forward enough to get the motor out from the top.
In terms of fuse links for the fan motors, ZR1s are the same. I know because I didn't have the tools to get to the fuse links and figure out which one was melted, so I took it to a shop. They didn't have a new fuse link so they cut one out of a totalled ZR1 they had. It cost more to have the fuse link fixed than I paid for the new motor!
