I read before that there are 3 in the system but my Haynes book only refers to one. How many are there and where are they located? I thought there was 2 on the exhaust and 1 on the air intake. Is this right?
Hmm. I have the 2 precats but none postcat. I remember changing those two out before. I did notice something on the air intake duct though. I have no idea what it is or what it does but I just assumed it was the 3rd sensor. Kinda like a air quality sensor before it enters the engine? Guess not if the sensors are located on the exhaust. What is that for anyway?

Could a previous owner relocated the MAT sensor to the air duct?
The previous owner was my dad and he did nothing to this thing. I mean NOTHING. Didn't even change spark plugs or air filter. I'll get a pic of it later to show you what I'm talking about.
Post-cat O2 sensors weren't required until OBD2 in '96. I think certain '94s or '95s may have had one post-cat sensor, but I heard it just kind of sits there and does nothing.
Does the IAT sensor ever need replacing? What does it do?
On a MAF'ed engine, other than helping the PCM figure out if a choke function is needed on start up and some diagnostic functions, not much. If your MAF fails and the PCM is forced to go to speed density mod, then the IAT sensors is used full time.
On a 92 there are two O2 sensors. They are located on the exhaust pipes just above each cat. They are the "single wire" variety (not heated).
Your picture shows the Intake Air Temp sensor. I just changed mine out (along with other sensor) last night since it was 10 yrs old. ( got a good price from Jeff Koop)..the ECM checks the MAP, CTS and the IAC for start up to set idle.
Hope this helps.
