Default Midyear change on oil pan?

I need to replace the oil pan in my 85. I thought it was strange that the oil pans are for the 85 was the same as the 80 thru 84. So I order the oil pan and gasket, they will not fit. When I look at oil pans marked 86 thru 89 they look like mine. Are everyone’s part numbers off by one year or did they change the oil pan (and block) mid year.

Do you have a 1 piece rear main? If so the block may have been changed and thus the difference. Just a thought because the 84/85 should be identical.

It is a one piece. Didn’t the 84 come with the L83 cross fire? The 85 has the tuned port L98.

84 crossfire 85 tpi. But the 85 isn't supposed to have a 1 piece rear main. The rear main should be the old style two piece. So if that's the case, you do need the 86 pan.

I was told if the dipstick is on the passenger side on a Chevy engine it’s a one piece, if it’s on the drivers side it’s a two piece rear main. Besides that with the oil pan off what am I looking at to confirm.

85 and early 86 has 2 piece rear seal, then in 86 they went to one piece.

Looks like mine is a one piece. As far as I know this is the original engine. I just need to find a oil pan that fits.

Definitely a one piece rear seal. I wonder if you have roller lifters as well.

I guess I’ll order a 86 oil pan and see if it will fit. I should pull the valve covers and see if it has rollers. It does not have aluminum heads.

your pan is definitely for a one piece rear seal. Do you have an issue with your stock pan?

Make sure you get a Corvette specific pan, and not just a small block: pan. A corvette pan will be 7 inches deep (6 and 7/8ths plus gasket) that replacement pan looks deeper.

The stock pan has a small pinhole right underneath the oil plug bung. A repair was done years ago but it has always left a small mark wherever it was parked. Funny thing is when I took the pan off to get it fixed I am all but positive I just got a gasket for an 85 with no issues. Now I ordered the pan and gasket from different vendors and the gasket I bought fits the pan I bought but neither fit the car.
the pan I ordered was listed as a Corvette specific pan.

I bought a gasket for an 86 Corvette and it matches up perfectly so I will order a pan for an 86 and it should fit.

My '85 has the exact same pan as yours. My car has the steel heads and no roller lifters. I think your supplier made a mistake and supplied you with the wrong parts. I ordered my oil pan gasket from Rock Auto for an '85 and it fit perfectly.

P.S. Your new pan doesn't have the correct relief for the dipstick.

Thanx Randy, I sent the oil pan back and will order one for an 86. The crazy thing is I bought the pan from one vendor, the gasket from another. The gasket fits the pan that was sent (both for a 2 piece seal). Most listings lump the 85 oil pan with the earlier 80s engines. I think the switch to singe piece seal on the corvette happens in 85 not 86 and for some reason the listings are wrong.
