I have the exhaust off and noticed the fuel filter right in plain sight. With 95K miles on it, should I replace the filter now? Will gas dump all over me? Is sealant required on the threads when re-installing?
Now would be the time!! You wil have to remove the pressure from the lines unless the car hasn't run for a couple days. Remove the gas filler cap and use a fuel pressure gauge attached to the Schrader valve under the pass. side fuel rail cover to release the pressure.
There are two o-rings inside the filter at each connector. When you get a filter, make sure you get the o-rings. They are not part of the filter and are sold separately. Make sure you use a line wrench to remove the filter. Regular open wrenches can round off the corners of the nuts.
Absolutely, if it's not been changed in 95K miles!
Do a forum search on archived topics, this has been covered before. There are two good tech tips also on it. Buy new o-rings for $1.80 when you buy the filter. Use only a Delco OEM filter. Took me about 90 minutes to do mine.
Do it now. I did mine on my 92 and regretted it. The fuel never stopped coming out even though I followed the Haynes procedure word for word. Couldn't get tools or my hand in at the top of the filter. Long story short, the car had to be towed because I stripped the threads on the fuel line. My mechanic had to rethread the line and put a new filter in. I will never attempt this again and I have done just about everything on my car. I'm sure it's easier on a lift but working on your back is tough (in this case anyway). Good luck. Wear clothes you intend to throw out. :nono:
JBAV1, the fuel filter is really easy to change. next time you do it disconnect the lower fuel line then pop the hood and pull the whole thing out the front. there will be a few nuts and screws to loosen first but it is a very easy change.
good luck
