Was driving my C4 to work yesterday. Gave it some gas through a turn at an intersection, ASR activated and pushed the gas pedal back as it usually does. I wasn't expecting it though, and I think I may have given it a little bit of resistance with my foot. Then as I completed the turn I noticed that the car was still accelerating despite me braking harder and harder. The throttle got stuck! I threw it into neutral, at which point it started redlining, so I pulled over and shut the car off. Tried pulling the pedal back to its normal position to get it unstuck, then turned it back on and it immediately started redlining again. Turned it off, pulled on the pedal again, then popped the hood. Throttle looked like it was closed at that point so I started it again, at which point it ran and drove fine. Took it to work and back with no issues. Is my ASR the cause of this? It certainly seemed to trigger the incident. If so, what can I do to fix it?
Intermittents are hard to say, not what you want to hear. Codes? Guessing tps error. If throttle was closed was IAC stuck or commanded open. A scanner or datalogger with snapshot function is pretty much required.
Not sure about codes, would there be any if no warning lights came on? (other than the 'ASR active' light that comes on whenever it is triggered). Also, I'm not super familiar as this is my first OBD1 car but are you referring to an OBDII scanner or are there ones available for the older system as well? I believe there is a way to check codes through the dash/trip computer, would that be any different than using a scanner? My car is a 94.
You will want scanner that does obd1 94 engine performance and ABS minimum.. There are scanners that do both obd1 and 2. Tech 1, Snap On MT2500 or similar. Topic of scanners is.popular someone is certain to chime in with there favorite.
I dont have access to a code scanner as of yet, but I tried the paperclip method which just yielded a code "C12" which from my understanding just means its in diagnostic mode. Would a scanner pick up any codes other than those found with this method?
Scanner reads data. paperclip flash codes DTCs are.pass / fail no grey. Intermittents fall nto grey until hard failure. DIY scanner and FSM are worthwhile. If investment to DIY is not your bag , local corvette / sports car club may have resources to guide you.
Is it possible your throttle cables and/or the ASR unit need to be lubricated?
There’s a button on your dashboard that you can turn the ASR off. If it happens again turn it off and see if it stops it. Then you will know for sure that it’s the ASR.
