Default Bad cat??

My friends 92 Coupe just started making this wierd hollow clanging noise from under the car, and you can only hear it when it gets warm. I thought maybe it was a spun bearing, but it goes away at times and it seemed that when I tapped on the passenger side cat the noise would go away. If the internals of the cat were broken up, would it make a hollow clanging noise like that? Or is this some sort of internal engine problem (has 114k BTW).

It could make a noise like that. Do the footwells seem to get hot when the car has been running? That would usually suggest a clogged up cat.

Does this clanging noise increase or decrease with rpm?

I'd have to ask about the footwells, but I'm going to say that it doesn't really get louder with RPM (kinda hard to tell with the Tri-Flow exh). Anyone else?

I spray ours with a water bottle when it gets in the plants. :)

sorry, I couldnt resist

If the noise varies directly with the revs of the motor, more than likely internal. Use the screw driver to the ear trick, works well for hard to find knocks
