You know, I don't really know. I guess I just thought since I had a 190 thermostat, anything above (10-20 degrees anyway) would seem to be overheating.
Nah. These cars have a HUGE acceptable operating range. The LT1 cars came with 180 t-stats....but the fan comes on at 228*. That's an operating range that spans a whopping 50*F! It's crazy...but that's how they were designed.
This. Sounds like it's working totally normally, to me.
When I fill coolant up in cars, I'll fill the radiator to the top when cold, just like you did, then I'll over fill the overflow bottle, knowing that there will be air that is expelled into the overflow bottle as the car runs and warms, and the system will draw some or most of the overage back into the cooling loop as it cools. I'll run it a day or two, then re-check the overflow bottle, top as necessary. Should stay there from then on.
This should work, but the C4 has a problem: the main hose from the engine to the radiator slopes down. Air can get stuck in the engine for some time. This is why one should fill the coolant with the front end up.
The small hole in the thermostat helps, while filling coolant the air comes out in little bubbles, will be pulled by the flow. Well, that's what I'm guessing anyway.
Thank you everyone. This has been killing me. I took the thermostat out, drilled a couple holes, took my time adding coolant, etc. I took a 2 hour drive today and the car never overheated. It got warm when slowing down, but, thanks to this forum and everyone with a TON of knowledge, I understand that is normal.
So, thanks to all who helped me get through this. I know for a fact that without this support I would have given up......
Sitting here enjoying a couple cold ones.............they taste so much better this way..........
