I want to keep my coolant temps within a certain range and I was looking in Ecklers and they sell cooling fan swithches that brings the fan on a certain temp and shuts it off at another temp. Has anybody ever used one? Are they any good?

Re: Fan switch (rick0829)
I see you have an 86, but do you have the aux fan in front of the radiator / condensor? The aux fan is an option that usually comes with Z51.
Here is the cooling formula that works for me:
Aux fan switch 200 on / 180 ish off.
180* Thermostat
Remove the radiator and clean out all the stuff in between the radaitor and condensor. Also clean condensor. Need to do this often.
Chip in ecm reprogrammed by Craig Marcho for 195* ish on and 185* ish off.
Works great on my 89.
If you don't have the aux fan you can still install the aux fan switch (between plugs 1 and 3 on the drivers side head) and use this ground to drive the main fan relay. However this will cause the fan to come on at any vehicle speed. The ecm will shut off the main fan above about 35 mph as it is not necessary (may even be a hinderance, and will certainly increase wear on the fan).
You need to match the aux fan switch to your thermostat so the fan kicks on/off correctly around the stat's opening temp.
Since you don't have an aux fan, you will need to remove the square plug from the block below #1 & #3 spark plugs (see old posts for help on that one) and install the aux fan sw there.
I have a C4 Tech Tip on how to wire that aux fan sw into the main fan relay so that either the aux fan sw or the ECM can bring on the fan.
got a fan switch on my '94. its great if your stuck in traffic or for one of those really hot days. i mounted mine between my legs under the dash. it sits about 6" to the left of the computer port, so its tucked out of sight. i say go for it...
It does have an AUX fan(2 fans one in front of the radiator and one on the engine side of the radiator), I replaced the radiator about a month ago. Maybe the primary fan is not working like it should? The fan on the front of the radiator comes on at about 220 and off at 200 I have never seen the the one on the engine side of the radiator come on. Could there be a problem with the primary fan? I will look into it this weekend
Some reasons that the main fan won't come on:
1. Is engine hot enough. ECM turns fan on at 226 and off at 220.
2. Relay failure.
3. ECM Quad driver failure (this grounds the relay to turn fan on)
4. Fusable link blown.
