Do you know if the following procedure applies to our vettes? I got it from a friend of mine that owns a BMW.
1.Turn the ignition to the On position, but do not start the car.
2. Immediately depress the accelerator fully and release fully 5 times in quick succession.
3. Wait a couple of seconds.
4. The Check Engine light will flash once, then start to blink. All codes are comprised of 4 digits. The number of blinks corresponds to the fault code. For example, ON, pause, ON ON, pause, ON ON, pause, ON ON, off would be a 1222.
Re: Fault code procedure for Vettes? (Bill-35thAnvrsy-88)
No, that BMW trick won't work on any Chevy. On your '88 you can pull codes by sticking a paper clip into the aldl (assembly line diagnostic link) plug located under the dash above the gas pedal. I can't remember which terminals you are jumpering but somebody will post that for you. Then you turn the key to the on position but don't crank it. The service engine soon light starts to blink. Counting the blinks gives you the codes. All the codes are 2 digits. There is a longer pause between codes. The first code that blinks is a twelve. It blinks like this: blink-short pause-blink-blink,,,,,longer pause,,,,,,then repeats. After the 12 shows 3 times it will start blinking any stored codes, if there are any. Each stored code will blink 3 times before moving to the next stored code. After all codes there is a long pause and it returns to the code 12 blinks. You can buy a book with a fancy plug that fits right into the aldl and makes the light blink the codes for you so you don't have to use the paper clip. The book lists all the codes for the '82-about '95 Chevy's. I think it's about $30 at parts stores. I did that because I like being able to just plug the plug in and turn the key to on and that turns on the electric cooling fan. Helps cool things down better after a hot run. The ecm won't turn the fan on if the engine is off.
