OK, I really dig the sound that I am getting with elims, but I am worried about lost horspower/torque. Would it be worth it to switch to some mufflers? If so, what is best for performance? I care more about speed than sound...but I want a good "Chevy Small Block Sound..." Any Thoughts? Thanks in advance.
Re: Replacing Elims with Mufflers?? For speed...? (Knight Ryder)
Me too. I had elims on the 92 and loved the sound, but missed the power.
I found a set of almost new stock mufflers off a 96 LT4 to put back on.
Immediate pick up in power over the elims.
I love the power more than the sound definetly.
Re: Replacing Elims with Mufflers?? For speed...? (Knight Ryder)
Loved the sound of the Elims but my co-pilot didn't. Installed Corsas ... perfect choice. No resonance, quiet when cruising w/the wife, and really alive at WOT. I think Mojo is right about loss of torque w/the elims but unless you dyno before & after or compare time slips, I'm not sure you can really tell the difference.
btw, if you decide to go with Corsas, the quality and fitment are excellent. I did my own install and it wasn't a difficult job at all.
Re: Replacing Elims with Mufflers?? For speed...? (tuband)
I did the elims, didn't notice any loss. Picked up 2/10th's at the track, from 13.35 to a 13.15.
The resonance is a little annoying after the past several years. If it's too loud after my new set of mods :D are finished, I'm going to install the corsa.
My new exhaust might be too loud: TPIS Headers, 3" Random Tech Cats, X Pipe, Eliminators...
Re: Replacing Elims with Mufflers?? For speed...? (Knight Ryder)
I'm running the muffler eliminator pipes on my '85, my car seems to run better with them. I don't understand how they're making some of the cars lose performance. The losses you guys are describing, are they on cars with mods or totally stock? I thought replacing restrictive mufflers would enhance performance. Fill me in guys! Am I missing something? :chevy
Re: Replacing Elims with Mufflers?? For speed...? (92corvette)
Have nothing more to go on than an experienced seat of the pants, but I did not notice any change when I put the elims on my '95. Don't forget you are also shedding a lot of weight, and the stock cats and resonator should provide more than enough back pressure. I sure see a lot of drag racers that use straight pipes.....
Re: Replacing Elims with Mufflers?? For speed...? (Colorado Chuck)
When I had stock exhaust, from a stop light, on the street, I could hook with no problem. Now that I installed muffler elims, I can't get traction! I haven't had a chance to hit the track and get any gains, because I broke an exhaust bolt tying to install the front Y-pipe!
Here's the deal on eliminators. The stock mufflers with teh short piece of pipe you cut off with them weigh 17 lbs each. That's 34 lbs, but the pipes you replace them with weigh in around 20 lbs. So that's only a net loss of 14 lbs.
After talking with several LT1 guru's at the track, it was stated that teh cams in our car were designed to work with some back pressure or something like that. By removing the mufflers and doing nothing else, the combination is no longer optimized.
The little HP you do lose can't be felt just as any small gains from cutting open the airbox can't be felt. It's in your head.
I have hundreds of runs to back up my car.
It's right there in black and white. On a completely stock car, you will lose a little HP.
Now my et's improved to the tune of .10. My best with the full exhaust was 13.07 and my best without was 12.97.
The sound is well worth any small loss.
I may put the Corsa on my '93 and go back to eliminators for my '95.
