Default ZF6 Rear Seal

There are two seals listed for this transmission, one with a boot and one without. What is supposed to be there? The trans and driveshaft are from a 94 if that makes a difference.

Turbo 400 seal. You can get it any NAPA.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not having trouble finding a seal, there are two seals listed and I believe I've seen both style seals used in th400s too. I'm just asking what is supposed to be there, the one with the boot or with no boot.

No boot. Just the seal.

Be sure to check the yoke for scoring, and check for side play in the tailshaft bushing. If the seal's leaking there's a good chance the yoke's a sloppy fit in the bushing.

Live well,

i believe that will work.

but thats a:

’will work in a pinch but is a better choice out there ?’

so if you can find a nos zf6 tailshaft seal, id use that

also- the same guy that told me th400 seal works on the zf6 told me to ‘use red loctite’ on when installing that seal in the zf6 tail shaft.

welp, a leak developed BETWEEN the tailshaft housing and the tailshaft housing/driveshaft seal.....where the red loc-tite was..

luckily i was able to Carefully smear rtv Silicone around the outside of the tailshaft seal lip/ zf6 housing interface and stop the leak.

so that being said, are we all sure the th400 is the best zf6 tailshaft seal out there (same in every way as the zf6 nos tailshaft seal) ,

or merely ’it will work in a pinch if you cant find orignal nos parts’

because that same guy who told me to use the th400 seal, the red loc-tite, also told me to use bmw castrol 10w-60 engine oil in my transmission and that about destroyed my transmission

Head to the GM dealership and ask for a ZF seal. Let us know how that works out.

Agreed, but sometimes if you throw a pn into ebay you can get lucky and find the NOS part.

Other times you get burnt and someone tells you its the NOS part and its not.

Bill from ZFDoc sells a 20% longer seal for the tail shaft. I just bought one, I'd assume that would help with leaks and stability.

What kind of oil do you use now?

Are you sure that's a longer seal, and not a longer bushing?

Live well,

I've got some now, thank you. When it was put together originally it was running 75W-90 oil which was terrible but we didn't know any better.

Yeah, it's the bushing that's longer is what I meant. I was hoping that a longer bushing would help with oil sealing but there's a large oil channel on the side so I suppose I'm wrong.
