Default Door Lock - Control Rods

Hey friends,

I took the panel off my passenger-side door to see if I could determine the failure on the automatic door lock on that side. The push-button switches worked just fine, and I could hear the actuator firing too. When I got the panel off, I discover a pivot had been tie-wrapped to the door frame; the top fork was bent and worn too. I cut out the tie and took a photo. Looks like this:

So, it looks like I'm in need of some more parts. From what I was able to read in the FSM and some eBay hunting, it looks like I need a few actuator lock rods, and possibly clips.

Can anyone point me to a source for parts (couldn't find a "kit" at Ecklers)? And if someone has a picture of a complete set, could you upload it? It would save me the effort of having to pull off the driver's door panel and have a look.

Incidentally, I also found out why the courtesy door light isn't working: apparently the previous owner pulled that whole component out and left simply left the white lamp plastic in place. Great.

Chris

Chris,

Here are pics of the rods you are missing I shot from my parts manual.. I believe you will need #30 (pivot) #31 and #34 (both lock rods). Your pivot was damaged, that opening on the right in your pic should be a hole, not a "C" opening. I also included a pic of the part numbers for reference.

Looks like you could use a new boot on that actuator as well, but you might have to buy a good used one with an untorn boot instead. You may also need #63 (clip) which is P/N 20158344

Hope this helps.

Dave

Thanks Mr. Carter and Dave (again). Dave, your manual diagram is so much sharper than mine. I may also need new glasses.

I was able to get the pivot back in place and realign the forks. Ordering the arm and pawl clip now. Cheap parts, expensive shipping. JOY!

That pivot with the "C" opening is okay. That opening retains the lock rod at the "kink" that is shown in the diagram directly below the circle with the number 32 in it. The lock rod fits into that "C" notch then is squeezed closed to retain the rod. That "kink" becomes a pivot point.

Not sure what you mean by this comment.

Do you have the slider "****" that fits onto the lock lever below the latch mechanism? That slider is shown, but isn't numbered in Red86's diagram.

The lock switch is a pretty delicate item. I added a three pin connector to this switch to make the door panel removal process much easier!

Putting that inline plug in is a good idea for those early year cars, I would sometimes have problems working on the doors back when they where the Norm but 30 years later with brittle Plastic and a dozen take aparts
That's a good addition.
