I've had that happen several times on my 90. I think it's the vats not reading the key right and then it has to sit for a certain amount of time before it will start. Correct me if in wrong guys...

It might just be a dirty key... thingy. I forget what that little sensor in your key is called, but if the contacts are dirty enough, the car will not start because it will not recognize the key. Since it's already started once, it could be just that the wear in your pockets cleaned it up enough to work. Try cleaning the contacts on that... thingy. Soap and water might do the trick, but you might leave some soap residue if you don't sufficiently rinse it off. I'd recommend some isopropyl alcohol and a small cleaning brush (not a wire brush) to clean it, if you have those handily available.

If you sufficiently clean the key... thingy and it fails to start again soon, let us know; someone here may have other ideas.

And someone PLEASE tell him what the "thingy" is really called. Stupid 31 year old memory. :smash:

Edit: aawil beat me to it :D

I think it IS called the "thingy"

If the thingy gets dirty, it can cause problems.

Once you get your thingy cleaned up, be careful where you stick it so it wont get to dirty.

Your thingy is very important to you.. treat it nice. :D

I think the thingy is called a "pellet". If it's not dirty, it could be the contacts inside the tumbler thingy itself.

Now what's that "tumbler thingy" really called? :jester

I HAVE HAD IT HAPPEN TWICE ON MY LT4 SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW. YOU JUST NEED TO WAIT 10 MINUTES(OR SO???) AND TRY AGAIN. IT SHOULD START. IT IS RELATED TO THE KEY AND IT'S RESISTANCE(?). I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, I THINK I WAS TOLD IT IS OFTEN RELATED TO MOISTURE OR DIRT ON THE KEY. IT WAS MY UNDERSTANDING FROM THE SERVICE PEOPLE THIS IS A PRETTY COMMON PROBLEM, WHICH GM VIEWS AS NO BIG DEAL.

Look on your instrument cluster. If the SECURITY light is on solid, the VATS doesn't recognize your key. Pull the key, clean it off, and wait three long minutes, then re-insert and jiggle a bit.

Pellet, or resistor. Pick one. Thingy, well, I only have one of those, and it's not in the service manual.

I had that happen on mine, fairly inconsistently for over two months. After a huge search for the problem, it turned out it was that one of the screws on my started had started backing itself out and was almost off. It still made contact however, so whether or not it would turn over was really just luck.

I had the exact same thing happend to me then everything was ok for a few weeks then it happened again. Each time I would get out fiddle with the battery, check connections , then get back in and it would start right up. Well at first I thought maybe I had a loose battery connection but after it happened a couple of times over a 2 or 3 week period I started looking of my extra key. I then started using my extra key that came with the car and everything has been fine since. Now that was about 6 weeks ago so now I am thinking it was my Key that I was using. The pellet must of became bad or its contact within the ignition switch is hampered because of wear from usuage.

BTW: I am knockin on wood as i type because if i don't it will start doing it again.
