Default LT4 cam question.

I'm thinking of doing a cam come spring time, and I would like an LPE product. I really really don't want the car to sound anything but stock or very close to stock. What cam would be good for me, what kind of gains can I expect.
Car is 100% stock right now will that be a problem when switching to a different cam?

Considered the LT4 Hot Cam? It's a LOT cheaper than all the Lingenfelter stuff and it was developed specifically for your engine. It's a better bang for the buck than any of the Lingenfelter stuff I've seen. Essentially you're paying for a name.

Through the stock exhaust you will really have to listen in order to hear the cam.

I just put the hotcam in my LT4... you can hear the cam fairly easy with stock exhaust, but only people who know what what a cammed LT motor sounds like would know it's not stock. My motor was also 100% stock... I would recommend the Hotcam and have your PCM sent out to be reprogrammed... while your stock programming will run with a cam, it runs much smoother with the PCM programmed to match the car. Between the cam and some intake porting, I gained 30 HP at the rear wheels BEFORE the PCM was programmed... I hope to have gained another 6 to 8 with the tuning.

When I bought my car it was bone stock except for the Hot Cam. The installing owner had dynoed it before and after the cam, the result was a 32RWHP gain from the cam alone. I'm still running the stock PCM, but will get it reprogrammed one of these days. Like Nathan said, with stock exhaust, the lope at idle isn't that noticeable.

On a separate note, did you know your car (GS #334) is listed as a convertible on the GS Registry?? All GS owners are encouraged to register their cars at www.grandsportregistry.com, so I hope you'll take the time to do this.

Good luck on your cam decision!

Well I will give that some thought, It would be a shame not to stick a cam in thier if it is going to give me so much of a gain. Thanks guys

the LT-4 hotcam is a wonderful bolt in for a stock LT1 or LT4, it's duration and lift are right in line to create a good pull to over 6,000 rpms but still have good low end drivability. in my oppinion this is a really really well designed cam that costs less than the accel cams lingenfelter sells. just use a better spring than the GM hotcam spring, it's nothing too special, a dampened comp, k-motion or manley single spring would be much more fitting & live a lot longer.

For the LT1 it wouldn't be as simple as a cam swap... you would want to do the entire cam kit which includes new springs and the 1.6 roller rockers... and you would almost certainly need PCM programming.

Yup... will be fine, I'm still on undecided if I'm going to change mine or not. Maybe 3.90's or 4.10's if i even do.

I got quotes from 5 places... 2 @ $800, 2 @ $975 and 1 @ $1200... I went with one of the two that were 800. This was just for the cam install. Once I got the car apart I had the shop port the intake, replace plugs/wires, drain/fill the ZF6, install a 160 t-stat, clean/fill the radiator, rotate the tires and seal the rest of the block up on any oil leaks... car also needed a couple lifters replaced. I provided the wires, motor oil/filter, cam and most all gaskets including the oil pan... total cost for labor was 1200 and all parts were around 400.

If I stuck to just doing the cam, I'd of been out of there for under 900.

As far as the PCM reprogramming... two places, fastchips.com.. he charges 350 + 150 for upgrades... PCMforless charges 175 + 50 for upgrades... I personally went with PCMforless and the guy Bryan is great to deal with... 1st class act.

The car feels totally different now with the cam... pulls very hard on the top end... it was worth every penny to me. I am going the route of long tube headers and exhaust... I hope to be up in the 365-370 rwhp range when I'm done.
